1-800-Contacts

1-800-Contacts is the largest dealer of contacts in the world. It has more than 20 million contact lenses in stock, meaning that it can ship 90 percent of orders within 24 hours. Since its launch in 1996, the site has filled eight million orders for more than 2.5 million customers. It carries brands such as Acuvue, Biomedics, Expressions, Focus, FreshLook, Hydrogenics, Optima, Proclear and Soflens. To order from 1-800-Contacts you must provide a current prescription. Sometimes eye doctors will be reluctant to release your prescription -- they'd rather sell you the contacts themselves. But the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act, which went into effect in 2004, requires that doctors provide you with your prescription at the conclusion of your exam. It also is printed on every box of contacts you buy. Returns: You can return unopened boxes if your prescription changes, or if you are not satisfied. Sales Tax: Utah. Shipping: Standard shipping is free to the U.S. and Canada on orders of $50 or more (minimum five business days to U.S. addresses, seven days to Canada). Overnight delivery also is available. The site also ships internationally, with fees starting at $14.

It also sells gift baskets, business gifts, plants, gourmet foods and sweets. Search by price or event, or browse a list of bestselling items. Sales Tax: Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas or Virginia. Shipping: There is a $11.99 delivery charge on orders fulfilled by a local florist to addresses in the U.S. and Canada. The charge to addresses outside of North America is $21.99 per item. Domestic shipping charges on other items start at $4.99 per order. 123Inkjets

Most people buy an ink jet printer because they're a great bargain -- low cost and relatively high print quality. But when it comes time to replace the cartridges, they're hit with a relevation: ink is expensive. It's the old "cheap razors, expensive blades" strategy. By one estimate a printer cartridge that sells for $30 costs just $3.50 to make, although retail prices tend to be dropping as the technology improves. That's why many people turn to recycled cartridges, or generics. Remanufactured cartridges are those made by the original printer manufacturer that are cleaned and refilled. 123Inkjets stocks recycled cartridges that work with Apollo, Apple, Brother, Canon, Compaq, Dell, Epson, Hewlett Packard (HP), Lexmark, Pitney Bowes, Xerox and dozens of other brands of printers (see the site for a list). 123Inkjets also sells laser toner, ribbons, solid ink and printer cables. If you'd rather purchase original manufacturer cartridges, browse the list of those available at Staples or Office Depot. One thing to consider is the cost per page printed. One study commissioned by Hewlett Packard found that while its cartridges have a 2 percent failure rate, 70 percent of recycled cartridges did not last as long as promised. Consumer Reports found much the same thing. The manufacturers say this is because they design the strip of silicon on the cartridges that has the microscopic ink nozzles to last only as long it takes to empty the cartridge of ink. In other words, the cartridges for personal printers are supposed to be thrown away after one use. Cartridge refillers say this is bunk, that you can refill cartridges as many as seven times. And it does seem to work for many people -- there are $6.5 billion worth of refilled cartridge sales each year. If you using your printer for everyday printing, you should be fine with refilled cartridges and save 50 percent at the same time. If you are printing photos on greeting cards, brochures or family photos on expensive photo paper, it's probably best to go with an original manufacturer's cartridge. Returns: 123 Inkjets allows you to return defective cartridges up to one year after purchase, as long as they are at least 70 percent full. 123 Inkjets also pays return postage. If you order the wrong cartridge by mistake, you can return it for exchange but must pay the return postage yourself. Sales Tax: California. Shipping: Free on orders of $55 or more to 48 states, with free FedEx ground delivery on orders of $200 or more. Otherwise, $3.95 per order. Shipping is $7 per order to Alaska, Hawaii, APO/FPO and Canada, and $15 per order to U.S. territories.

Best Buy

Founded in 1966 by Richard Schulze, Best Buy was originally known as Sound of Music. After expanding into video in the early 1980s, Schulze changed the name to Best Buy. In 1989 he introduced a novel concept to retailing -- every in stock was put on the sales floor (rather than just a display model) and sold by specialists who were paid salaries rather than commissions. The online site, launched in 2000, is by far the largest of Best Buy's 550 retail outlets. It carries computers, printers, software, CDs, DVDs, video games, toys, televisions, DVD players, MP3 players, home theater systems, digital cameras, appliances, vacuums, heaters, cell phones and office products and furniture. Shop by category, keyword or brand. Besides its low prices, Best Buy's site is known for its free guides, such as its HDTV Information Center and Guide to Speakers. Don't miss the weekly specials, outlet store and Wednesday "hot deals." Returns: You can return items purchased online to any Best Buy store or by mail. All original packing materials, manuals and accessories must be included to avoid fees. Allow up to 21 days for processing; refunds will be credited only to the purchasing credit card. See site for information on where to send the product if you return it by mail (phone 888-237-8289 for instructions). If the product was damaged, defective or sent in error, Best Buy will pay return shipping. Sales Tax: All states that charge tax. Shipping: Shipping charges are calculated during checkout. To avoid them, select "store pickup." Most products will be waiting for you at the nearest Best Buy store within about an hour. However, for security reasons, only the person who made the online purchase can pick the item up. There is no extra shipping fee to Alaska and Hawaii for standard service.

Blair

Blair.com is a discount clothing and home decor store. Most of its business is done through print catalogs but it also has an online store. Blair was founded in 1910 as New Process Company by John L. Blair, Sr.. He initially sold black raincoats to ministers and funeral directors through the mail with credit extended for a "week's free trial." Today Blair is the ninth largest consumer apparel cataloger in the U.S., with annual sales of more than $580 million. Returns: "If any Blair product ever fails to perform to your satisfaction, you may return it for a refund, replacement or credit." Sales tax: Pennsylvania (home goods and specialty clothing such as swimsuits and tuxedos only). Shipping: $4.99 to $15.99 per order, depending on value. Add $5 per order for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Blinds.com

Blinds.com sells a variety of brand-name blinds, including Hunter Douglas, Levolor, Graber, Blinds.com, Prestige, Cartwright, Bali, Phifer and many more, including private-label (generic) products. The site is full of information about how to properly measure your windows before you order, which can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. A good place to start is the "Guide to Blinds," which explains the benefits of various types (fauxwood, wood, honeycomb, aluminum, PVC, roller shades, etc.). Each day Blinds.com compares its prices on a particular product to those at competitors such as Lowe's, Home Depot and Costco, to give you an idea of the savings. It also provides free samples and telephone support to help you measure correctly or get the blinds up, although it provides printed instructions with each order and promises that all of its products are easy to install. One of the first things you need to know is whether you have an inside or outside mount. The site explains, "An inside mount is when the blind, shade, or shutter fits inside of the window opening. Mounting as an inside mount generally has a cleaner, neater look. An outside mount can be used if there isn't enough depth to mount the product inside the opening. Sliding glass doors and wood cased shallow windows are popular outside mount choices." All hardware is provided with the possible exception of screws. You can only change or cancel an order during the first 24 hours, and only as long as it has not gone into production. If that is the case, there is a 10 percent fee. Returns: Because the blinds it sells are custom-made to your measurements, Blinds.com does not accept returns. That's why it's doubly important to make sure all of your window measurements are accurate. Each product page has instructions on how to measure. Measure every window twice because, as the site notes, "sometimes two or three windows in the same room can look identical but could actually be off by as much as three-quarters of an inch." If Blinds.com makes an error, it will repair or remake the blind at no cost. If it is a customer mistake, Blinds.com will have it altered or remade at a discount. Sales Tax: Texas. Shipping: Free on blinds that are less than 94 inches long shipped to addresses in the continental U.S. Shipping is $70 per shipment per manufacturer for blinds over 90 inches long. Blinds.com does ship outside the continental U.S., but you need to phone for rates.

Blue Nile

Founded in 1999, Blue Nile sells diamond, pearl, gemstone, platinum, gold and silver jewelry, including rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, watches and accessories. Search by keyword, product, occasion or material. Forbes.com recently wrote that Blue Nile deserves is "an elegant site with a vast selection of diamonds and fine jewelry accomodating all budgets" that deserves "top honors" as the best jewelry site on the Internet. Blue Nile is best known for its selection of 60,000 certified diamonds, which you can buy as pre-set pieces or loose stones. They are offered in a number of cuts, including princess, emerald and Asscher. You can search by criteria such as price, carat and color. Its Extraordinary Gifts section (under Gift Ideas) includes splurges such as a platinum 24-carat diamond eternity necklace for $70,000. One tool on the site allows you to construct a diamond engagement ring, stud earrings or pendant. It also has a tool that lets you compare diamonds side-by-side. Blue Nile has become so popular that it is now one of the 15 largest specialty jewelry retailers in the country. It sells more jewelry than Zales, Limoges, Ross Simons, Ice.com, Ashford.com and Diamond.com combined. In fact, it sells about 3 percent of all diamond engagement rings in the U.S. It also has repeatedly won the Bizrate Circle of Excellence Platinum Award for outstanding customer service, which it offers 24 hours. Notably, its telephone consultants don't work on commission. That and its Internet presence help keep prices low. You can save an additional 1.5 percent if you send payment by bank wire, rather than paying with a credit card. Blue Nile also offers financing on purchases over $750. Returns: You can return an item within 30 days of the day of shipment (excluding those with custom engraving) in its original condition for a refund or exchange. Phone 888-565-7610 for a Return Authorization Code. Customers are responsible for return postage and insurance. Sales Tax: Washington state. Shipping: Orders are shipped overnight free via Fed Ex. Jewelry items are placed in a blue velvet bag or blue velvet jewelry box tucked inside a gift box. All loose diamonds and rings are delivered overnight and presented in a lacquered wooden box. All purchases are covered by Chubb Insurance until the moment you sign for them.

Book Closeouts

Book Closeouts is my favorite place to browse: the books are brand new and dirt-cheap (as much as 90 percent off their original prices). It sells "remaindered" titles, which are books returned to publishers because they didn't sell. That doesn't necessarily mean they're obscure or badly written -- it's more typically the result of poor planning (i.e., the fifth printing of a great novel was one printing too many for the demand). The site is the online division of The Book Depot in St. Catherines, Ontario, which is one of the largest closeout/remainder stores in North America (it has more than five million titles in its warehouses). The company has a staff of 50 people and makes most of its money selling books to libraries and institutions. Sales tax: Canada. Shipping: Varies by order.

Book Club Deals

Book Club Deals, a companion site to Deal Dude, is a comprehensive guide to every discount book club available online to residents of the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Browse by category or search by keyword. The site also has an extensive FAQ on how clubs work, and you can sign up to be alerted when new deals are posted for any particular book club.

BookRenter

Founded in 2004, Bookrenter allows you to rent expensive college textbooks rather than buying them. A Business Marketing Management textbook that retails for $161.80 costs $95.05 to rent for the 90 days of a typical quarter. Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, which costs $165.30, is $78.56 for 90 days. CarsDirect

CarsDirect is an online service that helps you find the best price for new and used cars and trucks. First, research vehicles using its library of information. Once you have selected a make, model and year, browse the listings for used cars near your zip code or ask Cars Direct to find you the best price on a new vehicle. The Deal Dude recently shopped for a new Honda CR-V; after selecting the model and options and entering some basic information, CarsDirect showed the best price it could find nearby, and it happened to be the invoice price, meaning the dealer would only be making a profit on any incentives he received from the manufacturer. CarsDirect also can help arrange financing, so that you only have to show up at the dealer, sign the paperwork, and drive away with the car. In the end the Dude purchased his car for a fraction more from a local dealer; the Honda dealers that CarsDirect listed were far enough away to make it not worth the trip. But that was just my experience; yours will depend on where you live and what make you are interested in. There's no obligation if you get a quote through the service, and they do almost all the legwork except for picking up the car. The process itself was amazingly simple, you can always phone and talk to a real person, you'll have the confidence that you are getting a competitive price, with no haggling. It's probably the way everyone eventually will be buying vehicles.

Cheap Tickets

Cheap Tickets is an online reservation service that allows you to purchase tickets from most major airlines. You also can search for and book hotel rooms, rental cars, train tickets, cruises and vacation packages. Don't overlook the "Last-Minute Trips" section and Cheap Ticket deals. The site was founded in 1986 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. An airline offered an ad agency a number of discounted airline tickets instead of cash to pay for a job. The ad agency owner put an ad in the paper offering "Discounted cheap tickets for sale" to sell them. Realizing he might be onto something, he asked the airline to give him more tickets at a discount, and Cheap Tickets was born. Initially it operated from a kiosk but later a call center opened. Today, its website has 27 million registered users.

Computer Takeback

Computer Takeback is a campaign to recycle electronic waste, which includes obsolete computers and electronics. E-waste is the fastest growing portion of the waste stream, and it creates hazardous conditions by leaking lead, cadmium and mercury into landfills. Since it takes only about 1/70th of a teaspooon of mercury to contaminate 20 acres of lake, this is a serious problem. Currently less than 10 percent of computers are recycled, but pressure has been growing on manufacturers to get more involved in taking back their products. Even many of the computers that are recycled are sent overseas for dismantling, poisoning the land, air and water. Computer Takeback has information on how to return your computer equipment to manufacturers at little or no cost so it can be disposed of properly or recycled. Alternatively, Share the Technology lists nonprofit agencies that accept donations of computer equipment to be refurbished for use by local schools and charitable organizations. It also has information on donating used printer cartridges and cell phones to benefit schools through an organization called The Funding Factory.

Do-Not-Call Registry

The federal Do-Not-Call List allows you to add your name and home and cell phone numbers to a federal list that telemarketers are legally obliged not to contact. You can register online or phone 1-888-382-1222 toll-free. The Federal Trade Commission will begin enforcing the list on October 1, 2003. It expects that it will cut down on about 80 percent of unwanted solitications for anyone who registers. The agency expects as many as 60 million phone numbers to be registered in the first year. Marketers will have to check the list every three months. Those who call people who have been listed can be fined up to $11,000 for each violation. A consumer who has placed his or her numbers on the list and still receives calls can file complaints online or through an automated phone system. (Charities, pollsters and -- surprise, surprise -- politicians are exempt from the list.) Other exceptions: A merchant can call someone on the list if the person has bought, leased or rented from the merchant within the previous 18 months. It also can call if a person has inquired about or applied for something from the merchant during the previous three months. Your registration is effective for five years, after which is must be renewed online or by phoning the toll-free number. Once your register, you will notice a drop in telemarketing calls about three months later. The World Privacy Forum offers another great resource that lists the registry and nine other programs that allow you to opt-out of receiving material.

Donors Choose

Donors Choose is a unique program that allows you to fund proposals for classroom materials, field trips and other needs from teachers at public schools with low-income students. Search by category or keyword, read the teacher's proposal, and donate any amount you can to either partially or fully fund the project. When the project or materials are funded, you will receive personal thank-yous from the students and teachers. You can browse by type of resource needed (e.g., books, supplies, technology, trips, visitors, etc.), the region or subject category (Art & Music, Physical Education, Literacy & History, Math & Science And Beyond) or the cost to complete. You also can give a gift in someone's honor or purchase a gift certificate; you get the tax deduction and they get the thank-yous. The site also allows you to open gift registries, and then invite friends and family to donate to the proposals you recommend.
